Betsy DeVos was nominated by President Donald J. Trump as the Secretary of Education of the new cabinet. DeVos was elected as nominee on February 7, 2017 and officially became the Secretary of Education. DeVos is a Michigan billionaire, businesswoman, philanthropist, and politician who is now
currently the 11th seat as Secretary of Education. DeVos herself is a board member of Foundation for Excellence in Education and the chairwoman of the Alliance for School Choice and Acton Institute and head of All Children Matter PAC. Although, her nomination was split upon the Senate with a 51-50 tie that was decided upon by Vice President Mike Pence.
Although, many have speculated of the actions DeVos will now do after being elected with the belief of endangering the education
of many students. Despite this DeVos wants a safe and supportive learning environment for any child, disregarding their age or social characteristics. Agreement on investigating and responding to proof of alleged disparate impacts on students. Allowing an increase of representation of women and for minorities to achieve STEM careers. Finally fraud should not be accepted for both private and public institutions.
Alongside DeVos receiving criticism and opposition from many others of their beliefs as she is not a traditional public education insider with no personal experience with anything related upon public schools. Many believe that she is unqualified to public education without a deep understanding of the field regarding education. Alongside DeVos providing full support in funding charter schools to opposition on the status of public schools. Despite the outrage and speculations of many others, there is still much more to happen in the next four years of education for millions of children in the United States.
